Fintry Estates Must See

The restored stone manor built by Captain James Cameron Dun-Waters in the early 1900s, showcasing period rooms, artifacts, and displays about the estate’s history and the Dun-Waters family. Guided tours typically highlight its architecture, lakeside setting, and the story of how the estate operated as a model farm and orchard.

Things to do

    • Octagonal dairy barn: A distinctive eight-sided concrete dairy barn designed for Ayrshire cattle, considered one of the most unusual historic farm buildings in the Okanagan. Inside, exhibits and interpretive panels explain how the barn functioned, the central silo system, and innovations in dairy operations at the time.

    • Packing house and lakeside infrastructure: The historic fruit packing house near the shoreline, where fruit from the estate’s orchards was graded, boxed, and loaded onto barges and sternwheelers on Okanagan Lake for shipment around the region and beyond. The remains of the dock area and lakeside loading points help tell the story of water-based transport and trade.

    • Farm outbuildings and yard: Additional heritage buildings such as the horse barn, granary, machine shed, and gatekeeper’s house, along with restored fencing and yard layout that reflect how the working farm was organized in the early 20th century. Walking through this cluster gives a sense of Fintry as a self-contained agricultural community.

    • Water and power system remnants: Visible traces of the early irrigation and small-scale hydro system along Shorts Creek, including evidence of dams, pipes, and turbine use, which demonstrate how Dun-Waters brought pressurized water and electricity to the estate long before it was common in rural areas.

    • Historic gardens and grounds: The ornamental garden areas around the manor, including hedge or path layouts and small features like a garden labyrinth in more recent interpretation efforts, which echo the estate’s original landscaped character and its “country estate” feel on the Okanagan lakeshore.
